ALASKA & KAMCHATKA FLIES

ALASKA & KAMCHATKA FLIES

new york goose

Because of the similarities between Steelhead and Alaskan patterns, I’ve tied many flies for both Pacific Salmon and Trout fisherman headed to Alaska and Russia’s Kamchatka Penninsula.  The ESL Stinger Sculpin was particularly deadly for clients in 2002.  My Tundra Rat is a variation of my Steelhead Foam Mouse, and is also very effective.  2003 will be it’s first trip to Kamchatka.  I’ve listed a few of my best patterns below, but most Alaskan patterns are simple, so don’t hesitate to ask for something not listed. Some flies in the steelhead section are very effective for both trout and salmon in Alaska, so check out that page as well.

Below you will find some examples of the patterns I tie and the colors that are most popular.  If something is not here, or a color is not shown, that doesn’t mean I don’t tie it.  If you have any further questions, please give me a call or Email me at the address listed at the bottom of the page.

Stinger Flesh Fly.JPG - 13677 Bytes STINGER LEECH – FLESH
An important late season fly.  Stinger style lets the rabbit move like a piece of drifting flesh.   Much better action than tradtionally tied flies, and the Octopus hook holds fish better.  $2.75

A standard color for Alaska or Kamchatka, this fly works for all trout, char and salmon.  Can be effective as a carcas fly late in the season.  Stinger style hooks fish that would otherwise short strike.  $2.75

Tundra Rat.JPG - 14338 Bytes TUNDRA RAT
My variation on the Mouse Rat, based on my my favorite Steelhead dry. Excellent for Alaska, Kamchatka, New Zealand or anywhere big trout reside in the states.  Foam lip keeps the rats head up and makes a great disturbance.  $2.50
pollywog.JPG - 14296 Bytes PINK WOG
